The rules under internet marketing and social media vary from business to business, depending on what their goals are and who their market is. There are some things however that everyone can take a few notes on. Kurt Vonnegut is best known for writing novels but he knew the art of copywriting. In his essay, How To Use The Power of The Printed Word, he points out eight rules that can be applied to any type of writing.
1) “Find a subject you care about.”
If you genuinely care about a topic, others who share the same concern and interest will be drawn to you. Be passionate about what you are selling and it will show in your copy.
2) “Do not ramble, though.”
Great copy is kept concise. The less number of words the better.
3) “Keep it simple.”
Great copy is clear and won’t need much thinking from the readers. It should be easy for all sorts of markets to understand.
4) “Have the guts to cut.”
Even if you came up with the most beautiful sentence ever written, if it doesn’t speak to your target or is not relevant to your topic, delete it. Fluff will only disrupt the process from attention to call-to-action.
5) “Sound like yourself.”
Keep your writing natural to keep a unique tone of voice.
6) “Say what you mean to say.”
Write accurately and effectively to get your message understood.
7) “Pity the readers.”
Wordy writers don’t realize that it is unnecessary to drag the topic along for ages. Audiences want to keep things simple and clear.
8) “Provide detailed advice.”
Always provide a value proposition by solving a problem or satisfying your reader’s desire. Informative and entertaining content is valuable to keep your readers interested.
