Duda Makes Improvements in Line with Google PageSpeed

One of the major areas that every internet strategy consultant should be focusing on this year is speed. In an increasingly competitive online market, one of the biggest problems that many businesses are facing is a slow website.

Why Speed Matters

In June 2016, Google confirmed they were starting to use speed as a key factor in determining page rank. This year, they will also be introducing the mobile first index. That means moving forward, mobile capability and speed are going to be essential components in determining whether a website is going to be successful or not.

Addressing website speed is not just about pleasing Google. Ask any internet strategy consultant, and they will tell you – Internet users have a short attention span. According to DoubleClick, more than half of all mobile users will abandon a website if it takes more than a few seconds to load. It is also the case that faster sites experience higher conversion and engagement rates. There are an increasing number of initiatives designed to speed up mobile web pages, including Google AMP and Facebook Instant Articles. However, attention also must be paid to helping standard websites load faster.

What is Duda Doing to Improve Website Speeds?

Duda has been working on page speed as part of their internet strategy for the past two years, and already perform well in this area. However, with the new Google calculations coming into effect, Duda have been putting more effort into achieving high PageSpeed scores [AD1] for all websites built on the platform. In fact, Duda has set themselves a challenge to ensure a minimum score of 90 for every Duda template and sites built on the platform across all devices. These changes will go some way to ensuring that Duda customers have some of the highest performance sites on the internet.

How Has Duda Achieved Such High Scores?

Duda has reached these high page speed scores by working to ensure JavaScript and CSS coding is not stopping browsers rendering the original content. The entire JavaScript framework has been refactored to make sure that none of it is required to render the page. All of the JavaScript code now appears at the end of the <body> tag and loads last. Other content on the page has priority allowing it to load faster.

However, the CSS was a more difficult nut to crack. Browsers need CSS definition to show the appropriate style for the elements on the page, and If it were to be loaded last, like the JavaScript, the rendering page would not be aesthetically pleasing. As any internet strategy consultant will tell you, visuals are key to holding interest, and an ugly page will turn visitors off. To combat the problem, Duda has created a method that identifies the critical elements of CSS and places those at the head of the page. Any leftover CSS is put at the bottom as it is not required immediately to style the page.

Duda has also looked at improving overall optimization of images by compression and resizing. Duda now uses highly recommended lossy image compression, which drastically reduces file size without sacrificing quality.
